Because children and adolescents spend the majority of their waking hours in school, it is vital to work with schools and districts to create healthy learning environments that empower all students to thrive physically, emotionally, and academically. Additionally, schools are one of the most efficient systems for reaching children and youth to provide health services and other programs. Integrating health services and programs more deeply into the day-to-day lives of students will, in turn, improve academic achievement and learning. Effective wellness policies and active wellness councils support these collaborations and the implementation and evaluation of wellness programs; laying the foundation for healthy school environments.
