Childhood Health and Wellness Pregnancy
It’s Not Too Late!
December 2 – 8, 2018, is National Influenza Vaccination Week, an excellent opportunity to encourage all WIC participants, and staff, to get their flu vaccine. The flu can cause mild to severe illness, but can also cause complications, some of which can be life-threatening. Getting the flu vaccine is the most important step to protecting against the flu, especially for:
- Pregnant women and their developing babies
- Children younger than 5 years of age
- American Indian and Alaskan Native children
The CDC offers a number of resources, many in Spanish, to help promote and educate on flu vaccinations, including resources for:
- Parents with young children that includes a video and fact sheet, available in Spanish
- Underserved populations that includes information on how to talk to and share facts with participants who may be hesitant to get a flu vaccine
- Flu prevention steps that highlights good health habits and a link to a video entitled Do your part to stop the spread of flu at home
- Safety information about the flu vaccine, including a Q&A and information specific to getting the flu shot during pregnancy
- Informational videos, flyers, posters and handouts to help promote and emphasize the importance of getting a flu shot
- Web tools and communication resources such as banners, animations and images
On the WIC Works Resource System, you can find additional flu resources to help educate and support participants such as:
- A Flu Resources page which has information from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics
- The Immunizations Education and Resources page, which includes links to vaccine-related online resources, handouts and guides, many available in Spanish
- Immunizations for Parents and Parents-to-be booklets, in Spanish and English, available for download
